Pell also served as the inaugural prefect of the Secretariat for the Economy between 2014 and 2019 and was summoned to Rome in 2014 to clean up the Vatican’s finances. He was frequently referred to as the Church’s third-ranking official.
Prior to becoming one of the Pope’s top advisors, Cardinal Pell served as the Archbishop of both Melbourne and Sydney. When the court determined that he had assaulted two boys while serving as the Archbishop of Melbourne in the 1990s, he made headlines in 2018.
Prior to the High Court of Australia’s decision to overturn the verdict in 2020, Pell served 13 months in prison. The former Vatican treasurer is the most senior Church official ever imprisoned for such acts and the highest-ranking Catholic cleric in Australia.
